Defragmenting

Defragment or defrag is a computer term meaning something sort of like putting the pieces of the puzzle back together again.

What happens over time, when deleting files, moving files, uninstalling and installing programs, as well as many other reasons, your hard drive gets fragmented. This means that pieces of your files have been split up or scattered over the hard drive taking it longer to search for and execute the complete files.

Watch the video below which shows you how to defrag your hard drive. And be patient, some hard drives, depending on the size may take hours. A good time to run it would be at night before you go to bed or any other time you wouldn't use your computer for a long period of time.

For an alternative disk defragment program which I think did a better job for my system than what comes with Windows is AusLogics Disk Defrag and is totally free.

Defragging with the Windows program can be pretty exhausting as it can take a very long time and also restart. An advanced defragger like Diskeeper makes it easy to defrag without manual intervention. Options like background defrag, low free space defrag and MFT defrag are reallu useful.
